The Lagos State Government has announced an increase in boarding fees for all public secondary schools from the previous N35,000 to N100,000 per term. This decision, confirmed through a circular issued by the Director of Basic Education Services, Olufemi Asaolu, is set to take effect from the 2024/2025 academic session.
The circular, titled “Review of Boarding Fees in All Public Secondary Schools in Lagos State for 2024/2025 Session,” was addressed to all boarding school principals. It emphasized that no additional fees should be collected beyond the newly approved amount. The resumption date for the new term remains September 15, 2024.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration cited the ongoing economic challenges and rising inflation as key reasons for the fee hike. The increase represents nearly a 300% rise from the previous fee, reflecting the state’s efforts to manage the financial demands of maintaining public boarding schools.
Parents and guardians have expressed mixed reactions to the announcement. While some understand the necessity given the economic conditions, others are concerned about the financial burden it places on families already struggling with the high cost of living.
The Lagos State Government has assured the public that the increased fees will be utilized to improve the quality of facilities and services in public boarding schools, aiming to provide a better educational environment for students.
