The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) has issued a stern warning to Infinix, a mobile phone manufacturer, over allegations of unauthorized marketing activities. The NPFL claims that Infinix has been exploiting the league’s assets without proper authorization, a move that could lead to legal action.
The controversy arose after Infinix was seen presenting a Man-of-the-Match award during a recent match between Plateau United and Niger Tornadoes in Jos. This action was deemed unauthorized as Infinix is not officially affiliated with the NPFL. The league’s chairman, Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, emphasized that only brands with formal agreements are permitted to engage in such activities.
Elegbeleye stated, “Last week, we circulated a memo to all clubs, urging them to regularize their marketing activities by adhering to the processes outlined in our Framework and Rules. Infinix, a brand not affiliated with the NPFL, was seen presenting a Man-of-the-Match award, both last season and again in Jos during Matchday. We may be left with no option but to take legal action to protect our league assets from such underhanded marketing”.
The NPFL views the Man-of-the-Match award as a key asset of the league, reserved exclusively for sponsors with formal agreements. Elegbeleye further warned that any club facilitating such unauthorized actions would face stiff penalties. “Sporadic presentations of cheap mobile devices devalue the league and will not be tolerated. Clubs are free to seek sponsorship, but they must comply with the established processes to ensure the league’s assets are not undermined,” he added.
