The Nigerian Senate has passed a bill to establish the South West Development Commission, aiming to tackle the environmental, ecological, and developmental challenges in the southwestern region of Nigeria. The bill, which passed its third reading on Thursday, was presented by Senator Kaka Lawan, the chair of the Committee on Special Duties.
The commission will focus on addressing infrastructural deficits, ecological problems, and other socio-economic issues in the South West, which includes Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti States. It will receive funds from the federation account and donations from development partners to support its initiatives.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who presided over the session, praised the committee for its work and emphasized the importance of the commission in fast-tracking development in the region. The bill will now be transmitted to President Bola Tinubu for assent.
