Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has announced plans to begin the payment of a N70,000 minimum wage for workers once negotiations on consequential salary adjustments are resolved. Speaking at the 2024 World Teachers’ Day celebration in Ibadan, the governor also revealed an extension of the N25,000 wage award to workers and a N15,000 wage award to pensioners for an additional three months, to cover the period of negotiation.
Makinde reassured workers that the payment of these wage awards would end once negotiations are concluded and the new minimum wage is implemented. “Negotiations will start next week, and we will pay the N70,000 minimum wage. However, the consequential adjustment is still under discussion between the NLC and our team,” he said.
The governor expressed his gratitude to teachers for their unwavering support during the last election and praised their contributions to Oyo State’s development. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare of teachers and civil servants, ensuring their continued productivity.
Makinde also highlighted education as a central focus of his government, promising to improve educational infrastructure and provide conducive environments for teaching. He announced plans to establish a N10 billion annual education intervention fund and recruit more teachers to fill the gaps in the sector.
During the event, the governor commissioned a block of 10 classrooms built by the NUT at their Model School and affirmed his commitment to improving infrastructure, including roads within the Owode Housing Estate.
The Oyo NUT Chairman, Comrade Raji Ismail, and NLC Chairman, Comrade Kayode Martins, both lauded the governor’s efforts in enhancing education and workers’ welfare, with Martins affirming the governor’s commitment to implementing the minimum wage.
