Vice President Kashim Shettima has reiterated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s strong commitment to addressing Nigeria’s food security challenges, with a focus on combating malnutrition. He emphasized that collaboration with international bodies like the World Food Programme (WFP) is crucial to supporting both federal and state efforts in this regard.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by a delegation from the WFP, led by its Executive Director, Mrs. Cindy McCain, at the Presidential Villa on Monday, Shettima outlined the government’s commitment to strengthening food systems and improving nutrition across the country.
“The president has made food security a top priority and is dedicated to tackling the issue of food insecurity in Nigeria. Enhanced collaboration between the WFP and the government is necessary to address malnutrition and bolster food systems,” Shettima said.
He also highlighted the introduction of a nationwide school feeding programme by the federal government as part of efforts to combat child malnutrition, while calling for further cooperation between the Ministry of Agriculture and the WFP.
Reflecting on his time as governor of Borno State, Shettima praised the WFP for its support during challenging times in the region, adding, “The WFP has been a trusted partner, and their continued assistance is needed as we work to overcome the significant challenges in Borno and other parts of the country.”
In her remarks, Mrs. McCain expressed the WFP’s enthusiasm for Nigeria’s initiatives to tackle food insecurity and malnutrition, and affirmed the organisation’s readiness to deepen its collaboration with the government.
She praised the government’s efforts, noting that “the potential for Africa-led solutions to address these challenges is commendable,” and assured the WFP’s continued partnership to support communities, particularly in conflict-affected areas.
