In a bid to address Nigeria’s escalating food insecurity, rising food prices, and persistent shortages, Honourable Muktar Tolani Shagaya, the representative of Ilorin West/Asa Federal Constituency, has called for strict enforcement of the Export Prohibition Act of 1989.
Hon. Shagaya recently moved a motion in the House of Representatives, urging the government to reinvigorate the implementation of this crucial legislation. The Act, which criminalizes the export and smuggling of essential food items, was originally designed to safeguard access to basic dietary staples for Nigerians during periods of crisis. However, its enforcement has been largely ineffective due to regulatory lapses and inadequate oversight.
“The current food crisis mirrors the very circumstances the Export Prohibition Act was meant to address,” Hon. Shagaya explained. “We are witnessing essential food products being diverted to export markets, further exacerbating the shortages and driving up prices for ordinary Nigerians.”
During his motion, Hon. Shagaya emphasized that enforcing the Act could significantly enhance food availability and help ease the financial burden on citizens. He further stressed the importance of government intervention in safeguarding the nation’s food supply in this critical period.
In response, the House of Representatives unanimously supported Hon. Shagaya’s resolution, demonstrating a collective commitment to tackling the pressing food crisis. The matter has now been referred to the relevant committees for immediate action.
Hon. Shagaya’s advocacy underscores the urgency of addressing Nigeria’s food security challenges and protecting the well-being of its citizens amid growing economic pressures.
