Vice President Kashim Shettima has inaugurated the National Road Safety Advisory Council (NaRSAC), urging its members to adopt global best practices to reduce traffic accidents across the country. The Vice President emphasized the importance of setting National Road Safety Strategy targets and ensuring seamless coordination between federal, state, and local governments to achieve shared road safety goals.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Shettima highlighted the critical role of road safety, describing it as “a vital part of the lifeline that connects the people of this nation.” He commended the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for its ongoing efforts to address Nigeria’s road traffic challenges.
The creation of NaRSAC follows recommendations from the World Bank Country Capacity Review, which identified key areas for improving road traffic administration and safety in Nigeria. VP Shettima called on FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed to embrace these recommendations as part of much-needed reforms in the sector.
Shettima praised the collaboration between federal and state authorities, as well as various government agencies, noting that the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening administrative capacities across the government.
The Corps Marshal, who also serves as secretary of the advisory council, stated that the council’s inauguration marks a new era in road safety management in Nigeria, accelerating the implementation of the Nigeria Road Safety Strategy (NRSS). This strategy, based on the globally recognized “safe system approach,” aims to eliminate road traffic fatalities.
NaRSAC is chaired by Vice President Shettima and includes six governors representing the six geopolitical zones, alongside ministers from key sectors and leaders from industry and security bodies.
