Nigeria’s Super Eagles secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Libya in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at Uyo’s Akwa Ibom Stadium on Friday.
Libya’s defensive tactics and time-wasting strategies frustrated the hosts, limiting Nigeria’s scoring opportunities. Despite dominating possession, the Super Eagles struggled to break through, managing only two shots on target in a goalless first half.
The second half remained a tense affair, with Libya sitting deep and absorbing sustained pressure from Nigeria’s attack. Alex Iwobi missed two clear opportunities, while Samuel Chukwueze forced the Libyan goalkeeper into two excellent saves.
Ademola Lookman thought he had broken the deadlock, but his effort was ruled out for offside. Just when it seemed like the match would end in a stalemate, substitute Fisayo Dele-Bashiru converted a pass from Moses Simon in the 84th minute, securing the victory for Nigeria.
The win propels the Super Eagles to seven points from three games, setting them up for a crucial return leg against Libya on Tuesday.
Coach Austin Eguavoen’s side will look to build on this momentum as they aim to secure their spot in the 2025 AFCON.
