The House of Representatives has introduced a bill to establish the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages. Sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and eight other representatives, the bill aims to promote the learning and preservation of Nigerian languages and culture.
The proposed university seeks to provide higher education in Nigerian languages and cultures to students from diverse backgrounds, irrespective of race, creed, or political beliefs. The bill passed its first reading on Thursday and is expected to undergo a second reading soon, followed by a public hearing to gather input from stakeholders.
According to Section II, Part I of the bill, the university will encourage the advancement of learning and offer opportunities for individuals to acquire higher education in Nigerian languages and cultures. It also aims to develop academic and professional programs leading to diplomas, degrees, and postgraduate research, focusing on practical skills in Nigerian languages and cultures to foster national development.
The establishment of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu University of Nigerian Languages is seen as a significant step towards strengthening Nigeria’s cultural heritage and promoting indigenous languages. The initiative has garnered support from various stakeholders, including the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), which recently launched a Centre for Advanced Neonatal Studies to enhance neonatal healthcare training.
The proposed university is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing the study and preservation of Nigerian languages, contributing to the country’s cultural and educational landscape.
