In a significant step towards boosting Nigeria’s technological and economic growth, Vice President Kashim Shettima has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with telecom giant Ericsson to establish a 5G Innovation Lab. The deal, finalized during Shettima’s visit to Ericsson’s global headquarters in Stockholm, aims to position Nigeria as a global leader in 5G technology, enhancing sectors such as agriculture, education, and mining.
Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, represented Nigeria in the agreement, while Peter Olusoji Ogundele signed on behalf of Ericsson. Dr. Tijani emphasized that the partnership aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, focusing on using digital technology to diversify the economy and accelerate development. Shettima highlighted the potential of 5G in improving national security by safeguarding critical oil infrastructure.
In addition to the telecom deal, VP Shettima held high-level talks with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, discussing trade expansion, strategic partnerships, and regional security cooperation between Nigeria and Sweden.
Shettima also visited Scania’s headquarters, exploring green transport solutions, including biofuel and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), as part of Nigeria’s push for cleaner, more efficient transportation systems. Scania’s expertise is expected to play a key role in modernizing Nigeria’s transport infrastructure.
This series of engagements in Sweden marks a major boost for Nigeria’s digital economy and infrastructure development, as the country continues to attract significant foreign investment.
