President Bola Tinubu has introduced new directives aimed at cutting government costs, limiting ministers, ministers of state, and heads of federal agencies to a maximum of three vehicles in their official convoys. According to a statement signed by Tinubu and released on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the measure is part of broader efforts to curb excessive government spending.
The statement also reaffirms Tinubu’s January 2024 directive, which reduced the number of officials accompanying him on foreign trips from 50 to 20, and on local trips to 25. Similarly, the Vice President’s entourage has been reduced to five officials for foreign trips and 15 for local engagements.
In addition to limiting convoy sizes, the President has ordered that no more than five security personnel be assigned to ministers and heads of agencies, consisting of four police officers and one Department of State Services (DSS) officer.
The National Security Adviser has also been tasked with working with military, paramilitary, and security agencies to reduce their vehicle and security personnel deployment, further emphasizing the urgency of these cost-cutting measures. All affected officials are expected to comply immediately.
