With over 40 million Nigerians spending an average of six hours on social media daily, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) is teaming up with popular influencer Enioluwa Adeoluwa to promote data protection. Announcing the partnership, National Commissioner Dr. Vincent Olatunji highlighted a six-month Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Adeoluwa, aimed at educating users on safeguarding personal information online.
The NDPC’s efforts follow the 2022 Nigeria Data Protection Act, yet significant gaps remain, especially in rural outreach. “With over 65 million Nigerians on social platforms, it’s crucial to raise awareness of data privacy,” Dr. Olatunji stated. Adeoluwa echoed this mission, emphasizing that the initiative aligns with his dedication to national progress and safer online spaces.
Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, also called on citizens and data protection officers (DPOs) to champion responsible data management, warning of risks like identity theft and cyber scams from careless sharing. The MoU will be assessed in six months to gauge its impact on boosting awareness and data protection literacy across Nigeria.
