Workshop Empowers Grassroots Ambassadors to Tackle Civil Liberties Challenges
Ilorin, Nigeria – The Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative (BBYDI) has trained grassroots advocates on digital rights and gender justice at a one-day workshop held at Sinclair Hotel, Ilorin. The event aimed to address issues such as gender inequality, digital rights violations, and restrictive legislation, equipping participants with advocacy skills to promote civil liberties and inclusive governance.
The workshop featured expert-led sessions and practical activities, with speakers emphasizing the intersection of digital rights and human rights. Halimat Olufade, the project lead, highlighted the importance of online freedom, privacy, and access to information in building democratic spaces.
Barrister Anthonia Oshiniwe explored the role of technology in empowering or marginalizing women, calling for policies to foster safer digital environments for women and girls. Professor Abdulfatai Sambo criticized Nigeria’s NGO Regulatory Bill, warning of its potential to suppress civil liberties and community development.
Other sessions focused on grassroots advocacy and digital inclusion. Mrs. Eduvie Olutimayin urged participants to leverage community engagement and creative strategies to drive change, while Mr. Wale Bakare called for inclusive policies to address systemic barriers in digital participation.
Participants also received hands-on training from Mr. Sanni Alausa-Issa on crafting advocacy messages and petitions tailored to specific audiences.
In his closing remarks, BBYDI Global Director, Abideen Olasupo, tasked participants with organizing town halls and engaging lawmakers on the NGO bill. He reaffirmed BBYDI’s commitment to grassroots advocacy and announced radio campaigns to raise awareness on gender justice and digital rights.
The workshop, supported by the Karibu Foundation, underscores BBYDI’s commitment to empowering advocates with tools to promote civil liberties and foster social change.
