Dr. Echezona Augustine Obiagbaosogu, who served as a Catholic priest for 17 years, has resigned from his clerical duties to embrace African traditional religion. Currently a lecturer in African Traditional Religion at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, Dr. Obiagbaosogu’s decision is rooted in his deep interest in indigenous spirituality and practices, particularly rainmaking.
In his doctoral research titled “Rainmaking and Control in Igbo African Medicine: A Case Study of Isieke in Ihiala Local Government Area, Anambra State,” he delved into traditional rainmaking practices. Dr. Obiagbaosogu attributes his fascination to his upbringing, influenced by a traditionalist maternal grandfather and a Christian father who valued traditional medicinal practices.
Reflecting on his journey, he stated, “I have come to realise that my true calling is to serve my people through the ancient traditions of our ancestors.” He emphasized that his transition is not a rejection of God but an embrace of the divine through indigenous practices.
Dr. Obiagbaosogu’s departure from the Catholic Church highlights a broader discourse on the relevance and recognition of African traditional religions in contemporary society. His journey reflects a personal and academic commitment to preserving and promoting indigenous African spiritual practices.
