The people of Moro Emirate in Moro Local Government Area of Kwara State are grieving the loss of their former representative in the state assembly, Chief Stephen Kolawole Oke, who passed away last Sunday.
In a statement, the Chairman of the Mooro Descendants Development Union (MODDU), Isiaka Jimoh, described Oke’s passing as a great loss to the community, recognizing his unwavering commitment to the progress of Moro and its people.
Jimoh highlighted Oke’s role as one of the founding members of MODDU and a respected politician known for his dedication to justice and the emancipation of the Moro people. He recalled how, as early as 1972, Oke co-founded the Oke-Moro/Oke-Asa Development Union (OMADU), which played a crucial role in the agitation for the creation of separate administrative divisions from the Ilorin division. His leadership in the struggle contributed to the establishment of Moro and Asa Local Government Areas in 1976.
Oke’s tenure in the Kwara State House of Assembly during the First and Second Republics (1979–1983) was marked by significant achievements. As the House Leader, he was a key figure in legislative processes that shaped the administration of Governor Adamu Attah.
Describing him as an icon in his hometown of Shao and across Kwara State, Jimoh emphasized Oke’s legacy of selfless service and sacrifice for the well-being of the Moro people. He stated that despite numerous challenges, Oke remained a steadfast advocate for his community and would be deeply missed for his patriotism and dedication.
