Rising Nigerian singer Ayo Maff has responded to criticism over his continued embrace of his “street” origins despite gaining mainstream recognition.
A social media user on X (formerly Twitter) had advised the artist to drop the “street” label, arguing that it could hinder his future success in the industry.
The post read:
“Can someone tell Ayomaff to stop claiming street? He’s mainstream now. His songs are charting, and you know a lot of street artists don’t even want to be called ‘street.’ This thing will limit him in the future.”
However, Ayo Maff strongly disagreed, asserting that his humble beginnings are an essential part of his identity and artistry.
He emphasized that rather than being a barrier, representing the streets through his music fuels his authenticity and inspiration.
Drawing parallels with global and Nigerian icons such as Tupac, Young Thug, and Olamide Baddo, Ayo Maff insisted that staying true to his roots will not stop him from reaching superstardom.
Responding on X, he wrote:
“But I’m from the street. I believe every man is supposed to represent something, right? I chose to represent my people with my music and the opportunity God has given me. Representing the street can’t limit me from becoming a mega superstar—that one na my destiny. People like Tupac, Young Thug, Olamide Baddo, and so on did it. I can do it too.”
Ayo Maff’s statement reinforces his commitment to authentic storytelling and staying connected to his roots, despite his rising status in the Nigerian music industry.
