Tragedy struck near the Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) on Tuesday when a student was gunned down in a suspected cult-related attack shortly after finishing his examinations.
According to eyewitness accounts, the yet-to-be-identified student was approached by a group of young men who shot him twice at close range near the institution’s back gate before escaping. The brazen attack has reignited public concern over the growing menace of cult violence in Lagos State.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that seven suspects had been apprehended in connection with the killing.
“At about 3 p.m. on Tuesday, a distress call was received at Sabo Division reporting the fatal shooting of a suspected cultist by alleged rival cult members in the Yaba area,” Hundeyin said.
Responding officers reportedly found the victim in a pool of blood with multiple bullet wounds. A search of his pockets yielded four rounds of live ammunition and charms. His body has since been deposited at the morgue for autopsy.
The killing is the latest in a string of cult-related incidents across Lagos. Just a day prior, a 16-year-old boy named Mustapha was fatally struck by a stray bullet during a suspected cult clash in Oyingbo, Ebute Metta.
Additionally, on Sunday, two men were discovered dead along Oladun Road in Idimu—one of whom had been decapitated—after what authorities suspect was another late-night cult attack.
The Lagos State Police Command says investigations into all three cases are currently ongoing.
