President Bola Tinubu has pledged that his government will ensure every victim of the devastating flood disaster in Mokwa, Niger State, receives support.
On Friday night, President Tinubu shared on his official X account that he received with deep concern the distressing news of severe flooding in Mokwa Local Government Area, which has tragically led to loss of life and the displacement of families.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the affected families and the good people of Niger State at this difficult time,” the president stated.
He confirmed that upon receiving the initial reports, he immediately activated the National Emergency Response Centre. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has also briefed him on the extent of the disaster and the urgent need for humanitarian aid.
“Search-and-rescue operations are ongoing, and all relevant federal agencies have been mobilized to support the state government’s efforts. Relief materials and temporary shelter assistance are being deployed without delay. We will ensure that no Nigerian affected by this disaster is left behind or unheard of,” Tinubu assured.
The President promised all those impacted that his government stands with them and will continue to work closely with the Niger State Government. The goal is to ensure a rapid, coordinated, and compassionate response that prioritizes lives, restores dignity, and speeds up recovery.
He urged all Nigerians to keep their fellow citizens in Mokwa in their thoughts and prayers, emphasizing that in times of trouble, strength comes from unity, resilience, and shared humanity.
“I have also directed our security agencies to assist in the emergency efforts while NEMA and the National Emergency Response Centre have been tasked with coordination and providing updates as necessary,” Tinubu added.
As of Friday evening, AFP reports indicated that the death toll from the flash floods in Mokwa, a market community in Niger State, had tragically risen to 115. The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) reported that torrential rains late on Wednesday washed away over 50 homes in Mokwa, resulting in drownings and many missing residents.
