Former First Lady of Nigeria, Dame Patience Jonathan, has been awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Psychology, Guidance, and Counselling from Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rivers State.
The announcement was made during the university’s 43rd postgraduate convocation ceremony, where Dame Jonathan urged Nigerians—particularly women and young people—to embrace lifelong learning. She emphasized that education has no age limit.
“I feel that no age is too late to achieve your academic dreams, whether you are young or old. If I can do it, you can also do it,” she said to applause from the audience.
Dame Jonathan, who resumed her studies after leaving public office, described her journey as proof that learning should continue even after retirement.
“Education provides the opportunity to always refresh one’s brain and learn new things,” she said.
She dedicated her doctorate to Nigerian women and reaffirmed her commitment to supporting vulnerable groups, including women, children, and youth.
“I encourage Nigerian women and the youth to aspire to become the best versions of themselves through quality education,” she added.
Expressing gratitude, Dame Jonathan thanked her family, especially her husband, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, for their support.
“I sincerely thank my family, especially my lovely husband, for all his support and useful suggestions. I also appreciate my children and friends for their encouragement,” she said emotionally.
Her achievement and message have resonated widely, sparking conversations on the importance of lifelong education in Nigeria.
