Billionaire entrepreneur and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has publicly backed a call to impeach U.S. President Donald Trump, marking a dramatic escalation in their increasingly bitter fallout.
According to Tribune Online, tensions between the two influential figures flared after Musk resigned from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a cost-cutting agency created following Trump’s return to the White House.
The rift deepened after Musk criticized Trump’s proposed legislation — dubbed the “Big, Beautiful Bill” — which aims to extend tax cuts, tighten federal benefit eligibility, and raise the national debt ceiling. Musk warned that the bill would dangerously inflate the country’s debt, urging Americans to pressure Congress to reject it.
Trump swiftly fired back, accusing Musk of hypocrisy and betrayal. Speaking from the White House, Trump said Musk had been fully briefed on the bill’s contents while serving in the administration and had voiced no objections until now. “All of a sudden he had a problem,” Trump said, expressing disappointment.
The conflict intensified when Trump, on his Truth Social platform, lashed out further, suggesting the U.S. should revoke billions of dollars in federal subsidies and contracts awarded to Musk’s companies — Tesla, SpaceX, and Starlink. “The easiest way to save money in our Budget… is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts,” Trump posted.
In a swift response, Musk announced that SpaceX would begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft, which is vital for missions to the International Space Station.
The drama took another turn when Musk endorsed a social media post by commentator Ian Miles Cheong, calling for Trump’s impeachment and replacement with Vice President JD Vance. Musk replied with a simple, yet pointed, “Yes.”Notably, Musk had previously claimed that Trump’s return to office would not have been possible without his support — a declaration now overshadowed by their very public and personal dispute.
