The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, has expressed his gratitude to Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for reinstating his full statutory rights. This commendation comes after the previous administration, led by Godwin Obaseki, had withdrawn these rights following the creation of parallel Benin Traditional Councils across the seven local government areas in Edo South Senatorial District.
In a letter of appreciation dated November 27, 2024, and endorsed by prominent Benin Chiefs, including Norense Ozigbo-Esere (Osuma of Benin), Edionwe Oliha (Oliha of Benin), Stanley Obamwonyi (Esere of Benin), and Osaro Idah (Obazelu of Benin), the monarch thanked the governor for his support. The letter highlighted the governor’s role in backing the Federal Government’s decision to recognize the Oba of Benin as the exclusive owner of all returned Benin artefacts looted by British colonial forces during the 1897 Benin massacre.
The traditional ruler, on behalf of the Benin Royal family and the entire Benin Kingdom, praised the state government for abolishing the new traditional councils in Edo South Senatorial District created by the previous administration. The government also withdrew the letter revoking the concession of the Oba Akenzua II Cultural Centre in Benin, among other issues.
“We deeply thank Your Excellency for deeming it fit and necessary to restore the full statutory rights of the Oba of Benin, for respecting the rights and privileges of the Omo N’Oba as the only traditional ruler of Benin Kingdom and the custodian of its rich cultural heritage,” the letter read. “This action of the governor, which is coming barely two weeks into your administration, is very well applauded. It is devastating to our detractors. It’s joyous to our friends and marvellous in the eyes of the Almighty God.”
The Oba of Benin prayed for continued strength and guidance for the governor as he works towards meaningful and robust transformation in Edo State.
