The Benue State Government has announced plans to rename Benue State University, Makurdi, in honor of its founder, the late Rev. Fr. Moses Adasu. This was revealed by the state governor, Hyacinth Alia, during the university’s combined convocation ceremony on Saturday. The governor stated that an executive bill has already been sent to the state House of Assembly to rename the institution as **Reverend Father Moses Adasu University**.
Rev. Fr. Moses Adasu, a Catholic priest and former governor of the state from 1991 to 1992, established the university, leaving an enduring legacy in the education sector. Governor Alia also disclosed plans to establish a satellite campus of the university in Adikpo, Kwande Local Government Area, to improve access to higher education for residents of the Benue North East senatorial district.
During the convocation, Governor Alia announced the donation of 500 computers to the university’s computer-based test center and promised a 100 percent Master’s Degree scholarship to all graduating students with first-class honors. He charged the graduands to uphold values of integrity and hard work, emphasizing that success is not solely about personal development but also about contributing positively to society.
The governor praised the university’s management for its implementation of the Centre for Food Technology and Research (CEFTER) program and pledged to collaborate with the World Bank to address post-harvest losses. He also expressed commitment to revamping the Wannune Tomato Company and Taraku Mills to boost the state’s economy and create jobs for the youth.
Governor Alia urged the graduands to consider agricultural opportunities under his administration’s policies, promising free funds and farm inputs to support those venturing into farming as a legitimate means of livelihood.
The renaming of the university and the associated initiatives mark a significant step in advancing education, innovation, and economic development in Benue State.
