The Borno State Government has announced that only N4.4 billion of the N13.1 billion pledged by various organizations and individuals for flood victims has been received. This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar, during a briefing at the Borno State Flood Disaster Situation Room in Maiduguri.
Prof. Tar explained that while numerous donations and pledges were made in response to the September 10 flood disaster, only a portion of the funds had been made available. The received N4.4 billion has been entrusted to a Disaster Relief Disbursement Committee, which includes members from federal and state agencies, traditional and religious leaders, as well as security and anti-corruption agencies such as the military, police, EFCC, and DSS.
“The governor has officially flagged off the disbursement of cash support to the first batch of affected households to help them rebuild their homes,” Tar stated, adding that victims who received initial food rations and cash support would receive additional aid soon.
Prof. Tar also addressed concerns regarding displaced persons in camps, clarifying that no one was being forced to leave. He explained that the government was working to merge camps, especially those located in schools, to facilitate the reopening of these institutions. Around 40% of the camps are set up in schools, and the government is planning to move displaced individuals to other camps to allow students to resume classes.
Additionally, he acknowledged that some flood victims have chosen to remain on the streets, at filling stations, or on business premises instead of relocating to official camps. The government has begun registering and supporting these individuals, urging them to move to safer camps for their protection.
Tar called for continued patience and cooperation from the public as the government, along with its partners, works to ease the suffering of those affected by the floods. He assured that relief efforts would continue to ensure proper assistance reaches all victims.
