The Borno State Government has confirmed the delivery of 669,569 doses of cholera vaccines from UNICEF and partners to vaccinate residents against the disease. While receiving the vaccines in Maiduguri, Fati Ali, Director of Disease Control and Immunisation at the Borno State Primary Health Care Development Board, expressed gratitude to UNICEF and partners for transporting the vaccines from Lagos to Borno State. Ali noted that “UNICEF is one of the partners supporting and collaborating with the state 100 percent.”
Ali announced, “We have received 669,569 doses of cholera vaccines. On behalf of the Borno State government, thank you very much, UNICEF and partners. We urge everyone to go to the nearest hospital facilities to get vaccinated.”
UNICEF Chief of Maiduguri Field Office, Dr. Gerida Birukila, highlighted that this is the second batch of vaccines, with around 300 doses already administered. She believed these initial doses helped curb the spread of cholera in Borno State, especially in IDP camps and among vulnerable populations.
“This new vaccine will help reach those at risk of cholera, particularly people in crowded areas and children,” Birukila explained. She also emphasized that the oral vaccine is safe and effective, without any side effects, suitable for individuals aged one and above.
In conclusion, Birukila said, “We thank the government of Borno State for giving us the opportunity to hand over these vaccines that will protect people from cholera.”
