In a significant development, the Department of State Services (DSS) has released six individuals arrested during the #EndBadGovernance protests that swept across Nigeria earlier this month.
According to competent security sources, the six detainees were freed last Thursday in Kaduna, following orders from DSS Director General, Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi. This move is seen as a gesture of goodwill and a commitment to upholding citizens’ rights to peaceful protest.
However, three other suspects will face prosecution for alleged criminal offenses committed during the protests. The DSS cited “incontrovertible evidence” against these individuals, indicating that they exploited the protests to perpetrate violence and crime.
The #EndBadGovernance protests, held August 1-10, 2024, aimed to bring attention to Nigeria’s economic hardships, insecurity, and governance issues. Unfortunately, the protests were hijacked by some criminal elements, leading to violence, property damage, and innocent civilians being subjected to harassment and intimidation.
The DSS has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order while respecting citizens’ constitutional rights. A top security source stated, “The DG DSS is not interested in the incarceration of innocent citizens for expressing their constitutional rights but is also not going to allow criminal elements to take laws into their hands.”
The released individuals have reportedly commended the DSS for their humane handling of the investigation and release. This development is seen as a positive step towards de-escalating tensions and promoting peaceful dialogue.
The Nigerian government has faced mounting pressure to address the country’s economic and security challenges. The #EndBadGovernance protests highlighted the growing frustration among citizens, particularly the youth.
As the country moves forward, the DSS’s balanced approach to maintaining law and order while respecting citizens’ rights will be closely watched.
