The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has awarded Nigeria three points and three goals after an abandoned Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya on October 15 in Benghazi. CAF’s Disciplinary Board ruled against Libya following an investigation, citing violations of several CAF regulations.
The decision comes after Nigeria’s Super Eagles and staff endured prolonged delays, stranded at an abandoned airport with insufficient support from the host nation. In response, CAF declared Libya to have forfeited the match, granting Nigeria a 3-0 victory. Additionally, the Libya Football Federation faces a USD 50,000 fine, which must be paid within 60 days.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe stressed that the organization will not tolerate any form of unsportsmanlike conduct or unfair treatment in African football. With the decision, Nigeria now tops Group D with 10 points from four games, bolstering their position in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
