A 41-year-old Canadian woman, Adrienne Munju, was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos for allegedly smuggling 35.20 kilograms of synthetic cannabis, known as “Canadian Loud.” Munju claimed she resorted to drug trafficking to fund her Master’s degree program in Canada.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) apprehended Munju on October 3, 2024, during the inward clearance of passengers arriving on a KLM flight from Canada. The illicit substance was concealed in two of her three bags, packed in 74 parcels.
In her statement, Munju revealed that she was promised $10,000 for successfully delivering the drugs. She admitted to being recruited through an online platform and stated that the financial burden of her education drove her to take the risk.
The NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, confirmed the arrest and highlighted the agency’s commitment to combating drug trafficking. The case has drawn significant attention, shedding light on the lengths some individuals go to in pursuit of their educational goals.
