Since being sworn in on June 13, 2023, Honourable Muktar Tolani Shagaya, the representative for Ilorin West/Asa Federal Constituency, has wasted no time in ramping up governance, representation, and community development efforts in his constituency. His dynamic approach to leadership has not only made waves in Ilorin but also in Abuja, where the story of a young, visionary leader determined to give the Ilorin Emirate a new lease on life is making rounds. From the moment he took office, Shagaya has been on a mission, and his swift actions speak volumes.
Over the past two months, Shagaya has made those who stood by him proud and silenced his detractors. Those who once doubted him or painted an unfavorable image of his candidacy are now forced to reckon with the results of his efforts. People who were once skeptical are witnessing firsthand his dedication, converting them from naysayers to firm supporters. Just this afternoon, a close friend who is usually reserved in his praise confessed to being “happily disappointed” by Shagaya’s leadership, expressing how his actions have exceeded expectations. The chants of “Shagaya De! Irorun Dé!” are no longer just political slogans—ease has truly come to the constituency under his leadership.
One of Shagaya’s standout initiatives is his Soap Making Empowerment program, which has provided constituents with valuable skills in the highly profitable liquid soap industry. Nigeria’s liquid soap market, valued at over ₦200 billion, presents significant opportunities for small-scale manufacturers due to growing demand for hygiene products. Shagaya’s vision to empower his people in this sector is a clear example of his foresight.
Another notable project is the Fish Farming Training program, which taps into Nigeria’s thriving fish industry. With over N1.3 trillion spent annually on fish and seafood, Shagaya has positioned his constituents to benefit from this lucrative sector, equipping them with the necessary tools and knowledge to become self-reliant and potentially employers of labor.
In a bid to support agriculture, Shagaya also distributed fertilizers to over 600 farmers from both Ilorin West and Asa LGAs. This initiative comes at a crucial time when food scarcity threatens the nation, and his efforts to ensure food security are both timely and commendable.
Recognizing the cultural importance of Aso Oke production, Shagaya took steps to empower local artisans by distributing Aso Oke materials. Despite the rising cost of raw materials, his intervention has boosted the livelihoods of many, helping them maintain and grow a craft that not only sustains the local economy but also has a growing international market.
Shagaya’s Medical Outreach program, which provided free healthcare services to over 3,000 constituents, has also been a resounding success. By offering consultations, diagnoses, treatments, and medications at no cost, he has shown a deep commitment to the well-being of his people, earning widespread praise for his hands-on approach to addressing health needs in the community.
In the last two months, Honourable Muktar Tolani Shagaya has demonstrated that he is a leader committed to making a difference. His actions speak louder than words, and his constituents are seeing firsthand the positive impact of his representation.
