The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has announced that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved its proposals aimed at promoting value orientation and reinforcing national symbols. One key decision includes mandating the rendition of the first stanza of the national anthem at official functions, while all three stanzas will be reserved for special occasions such as Independence Day, Democracy Day, National Assembly Inaugurations, Children’s Day, Armed Forces Remembrance Day, and Workers’ Day.
Speaking at a press conference in Lagos, NOA Director General Lanre Issa-Onilu, represented by Mrs. Olowoyo Ayesola, Director of Human Resources, also revealed that citizenship education would become a compulsory component of the curriculum from primary to secondary school. The move is part of NOA’s strategy to promote value reorientation and attitudinal change from a young age, aiming to instill national values and peace-driven conduct among citizens.
The FEC-approved memoranda include restoring the dignity and standardization of national symbols such as the National Flag, Anthem, Pledge, and Coat of Arms. The third stanza of the National Anthem will also be adopted as a national prayer, further emphasizing its significance in promoting patriotism and unity.
