The First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, has called on market women across the country to resist increasing food prices during the festive season. She made the appeal in Ebonyi State during the 2024 Women’s Day Celebration held at the Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium, Abakaliki.
In a statement released by her media aide, Busola Kukoyi, the First Lady emphasized the need for fairness in food pricing as the Yuletide season approaches. She also commended the state governor, Francis Nwifuru, for his significant support for women through appointments and various interventions.
As part of her visit, Mrs. Tinubu inaugurated a 3.1-kilometer runway at the Wilberforce Chuba Okadigbo International Airport in Onueke. She described the airport as a major boost to Ebonyi State’s socio-economic development and urged stakeholders to maximize its potential.
Later, during a meeting with traditional rulers at the Presidential Lodge in Abakaliki, the First Lady praised the state’s peaceful nature, calling it a “beacon of hope” for Nigeria. She urged the rulers to continue fostering unity and prosperity.
Highlighting the governor’s efforts, Mrs. Tinubu lauded his commitment to women empowerment, noting that his administration has exceeded the 35% benchmark for female appointments. She announced that 130 business owners in the state would receive ₦1 million each as recapitalization grants.
Through her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), the First Lady also donated ₦50 million, along with 20,000 wrappers, shoes, and bags to support women in Ebonyi State. “Nigeria has all it takes to be a great nation,” she said, urging everyone to work towards a brighter future.
