The current state of affairs in our beloved nation, Nigeria, continues to deteriorate with each passing day. It is evident that there are those, particularly among the youth, who have resigned themselves to a belief that our country is beyond redemption, thus perpetuating destructive behaviors. Nonetheless, a true patriot, one who upholds values of nationalism and morality, cannot align themselves with this detrimental trajectory.
It is imperative that we reflect on the following query: If we, the present generation of Nigerian youth, aspire to assume leadership roles in the future, how well-prepared are we to govern with integrity and elevate our nation to unprecedented levels of prosperity?
The unvarnished reality is that no single individual can single-handedly overhaul Nigeria’s current predicament without a holistic support from fellow citizens. It is an undeniable fact that, the pursuit for positive transformation that patriotic compatriots yearn for demands a comprehensive and collaborative approach.
In both Islamic and Nigerian laws, fostering positive change and actively contributing to the betterment of society are highly encouraged. In Islamic teachings, believers are called upon to be proactive in promoting good deeds and discouraging evil actions. The concept of “amr bil ma’ruf wa nahy anil munkar” (enjoining good and forbidding evil) is highlighted in various Islamic texts, emphasizing the significance of promoting positive change within the community. In Surah Aal-e-Imran, Verse 110, Allah states that the Ummah of Muhammad is the best nation ever raised up for mankind, whereas the virtues that this ummah hold are that, they enjoin what is right, forbid the wrong and believe in Allah. Therefore, whoever among this Ummah acquires these qualities, will have a share in this praise.
Furthermore, the Nigerian law supports the idea of fostering positive change and calls upon citizens to actively engage in activities that contribute to the development and progress of the nation. For instance, Sections 39 and 40 of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, (as amended), guarantees freedom of expression and association, allowing citizens to express their views and advocate for positive societal changes.
Additionally, various laws and policies in Nigeria focus on promoting peace, unity, and social development, aiming to create a conducive environment for positive changes to take place. For instance, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Nigeria works towards promoting national unity and cohesion among citizens, encouraging them to participate in nation-building activities that foster positive change.
In conclusion, Nigerian patriots can play a crucial role in shaping a better future for their communities and nation by upholding moral values, promoting social justice, and actively engaging in initiatives that promote positive transformation. While one person may not effectuate widespread change independently, they do have power over their own actions. Thus, the path to realizing the desired progress in the nation begins with personal introspection and individual reform.
Above all, we should all implore the Almighty for His guidance and enlightenment. May He grant sanity to the erring Nigerians; especially those in position of authority, and foster healing and advancement for our nation and its inhabitants in all spheres.
