Huawei Technologies has entered into a strategic partnership with Nigeria’s Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to establish a solar photovoltaic (PV) test facility in the country. This collaboration is part of Huawei’s broader commitment to advancing clean energy solutions and supporting Nigeria’s renewable energy sector.
The announcement was made during President Bola Tinubu’s visit to Huawei’s Beijing Research Centre, as part of his engagements at the ongoing China-Africa summit. During the visit, Huawei also unveiled its DigiTruck initiative, a mobile ICT classroom designed to enhance digital literacy in underserved Nigerian communities. The platform is expected to operate in 10 states annually, training at least 3,000 students each year.
Mr. Chris Lu, Chief Executive Officer of Huawei Nigeria, expressed the company’s strong support for Nigeria’s National Talent Export Programme (NATEP). He emphasized Huawei’s commitment to helping Nigeria become a talent outsourcing hub in Africa, enabling Nigerian technology professionals to serve both local and international markets.
The partnership between Huawei and the REA to establish the solar PV test facility is expected to boost Nigeria’s clean energy sector, offering a reliable platform for testing and developing solar power technologies. Nigeria has substantial solar energy potential, with an average of six hours of sunlight per day and an estimated capacity for concentrated solar power and photovoltaic generation of approximately 427,000 MW.
Huawei’s latest innovations in e-government, smart education, smart grid, and solar power were also showcased during President Tinubu’s tour of the company’s research centre. These technologies are expected to play a crucial role in enhancing public services, improving digital governance, and supporting Nigeria’s inclusive development goals.
The solar PV test facility is part of ongoing efforts to increase clean energy solutions within Nigeria’s electricity sector, which has seen a growing adoption of solar power among small businesses and households across the country.
