Nigerian singer Chinedu Okoli, widely known as Flavour N’abania, recently shared a pivotal moment in his journey to fame, revealing how he was once asked to step off the stage during a performance to make way for the renowned music duo, PSquare.
In a candid interview on the In My Opinion podcast, Flavour reflected on the challenges he faced early in his career and how this particular experience became a turning point.
“Things started to shift when I began encountering more established artists. After leaving the band, I found myself in the streets, and that’s when things got tough. I used to be in a structured environment, but now I was in a whole new world,” Flavour revealed.
He detailed one memorable incident: “I remember when P-square was promoting their Temptation album. They came to a spot I had built up a strong fan- base in, the City Centre in Enugu. The place was always packed every weekend, no matter what else was happening in town.”
He added, “The promoters brought PSquare to the venue while I was performing. Suddenly, their manager asked me to stop. I turned off my equipment, handed over the mic, and took a seat. As soon as PSquare started, the crowd, especially the girls, went wild. Paul took the mic and performed *Temptation*, and after they left, the manager told me to continue. I felt cold.”
Reflecting on the moment, Flavour said he realized the need to carve out his own path. “I thought, ‘We’re making the same music, so why the different reaction?’ That’s when it hit me—they were creating something unique, going to the studio, and making their own music. I was just a musician; I wasn’t an artist.”
He said, “That was the toughest part. I assumed it would be easy since I could sing and play instruments, but creating my own sound was a whole new challenge. It meant starting over, but it was necessary to transform from just being a music man into a true artist.”
