A letter has been circulating across various platforms, claiming that the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWASIEC) has postponed today’s local government election in Kwara State. Upon investigation, Kwara Express can confirm that this information is false and appears to be a deliberate attempt to mislead the public.
Our investigative team reached out to multiple stakeholders, including KWASIEC commissioners, political party chieftains from both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and civic organizations. A commissioner from KWASIEC unequivocally stated that the letter did not originate from the electoral body, clarifying that no official statement was made regarding any postponement.
Additionally, the APC party confirmed that they had received no such notice or communication regarding the postponement of the election. The letter itself lacks a crucial detail – a date, making its content highly disjointed and suspicious.
In contrast, the PDP, through its State Secretary, Comrade Kayode Great Kay, has strongly condemned the letter, labeling it as “FAKE NEWS ALERT!” and accusing the state government of spreading the misinformation to disenfranchise voters. According to him, this is an attempt to prevent determined Kwarans from coming out en masse to vote against the APC. Meanwhile, Kwara Express, a civic engagement platform, has urged citizens to ignore the false claims and go out to cast their votes.
From our investigation, it is clear that the letter circulating about the postponement is fraudulent. Both major political parties and the electoral body have denied its legitimacy. Citizens are encouraged to participate in today’s local government election without fear of disruption or delay.
