The Jigawa State Executive Council has approved the acquisition of Khadija University, Majia, for N11 billion. The institution, located in Majia town, Taura Local Government Area, will now be the second public university in the state.
Hon. Sagiru Musa, the Commissioner for Information, Youth, Sports, and Culture, announced this decision during a press briefing following the council’s weekly meeting. He noted that the acquisition followed thorough negotiations with the university’s proprietor.
According to Musa, the move is aimed at increasing access to higher education for Jigawa’s youth and fostering sustainable development in the state. “It was necessary to acquire the private university to help produce the skilled workforce required for the state’s growth,” he added.
The state has committed to an initial payment of N4 billion, with the remaining amount to be paid in installments. A committee, including the Commissioner for Higher Education and the Commissioner for Basic Education, has been set up to manage the transition and ensure that students’ academic progress is not interrupted.
Additionally, the Executive Council approved the procurement of 20 combined harvesters valued at N1.2 billion as part of its agricultural initiatives. This aligns with Governor Mallam Umar Namadi’s 12-point agenda, focused on boosting food production and creating job opportunities in the state.
