The Joint Tax Board (JTB) has announced a nationwide increase in the cost of driver’s licenses and vehicle number plates, effective from June 8, 2025. The new rates represent a significant upward review, with increases across all categories of licenses and number plates.
In a directive issued to all state revenue authorities and motor licensing offices, the JTB attributed the hike to rising production costs and the incorporation of enhanced security features into the documents.
Under the new fee structure, a standard driver’s license with a 3-year validity will now cost N15,000, up from N10,000, while the 5-year license has risen to N21,000 from N15,000. For tricycle and motorcycle riders, the new fees are N7,000 for three years and N11,000 for five years.
The cost of standard number plates for private and commercial vehicles has increased from N18,750 to N30,000. Articulated vehicles will now attract a fee of N90,000, up from N30,000. Fancy number plates now cost N400,000, double the previous amount of N200,000. Motorcycle number plates have also been adjusted, with standard plates rising from N5,000 to N12,000.
