The Kogi East Christian Elders Forum (KECEF) has raised concerns over the unauthorized exploitation of mineral resources in parts of the state, stressing that such activities offer no economic benefits to local communities.
In a communique signed by its National President, Pastor Joseph Egwuda, and National Secretary, Elder Joel Usman Dagono, the forum called for immediate intervention to curb the illegal mining operations.
The forum also decried the recurring violence and killings of young people in the region, urging for sustainable youth empowerment programs and economic opportunities, particularly in the agricultural sector.
Additionally, KECEF advocated for the establishment of a Cashew Nuts Management Board to prevent post-harvest losses and boost farmers’ earnings. They also called for urgent action to combat severe erosion threatening various communities.
During its congress, the forum resolved to register officially with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and appointed a nine-member Board of Trustees alongside a new national secretary. The leadership also dissolved the Dekina Local Government chapter and set up an interim committee to oversee its affairs.
Furthermore, a seven-member delegation was mandated to seek clarification from His Royal Majesty, Ata Igala, regarding concerns over an alleged plan to introduce an emirate system in Lokoja.
