The Kwara State Ministry of Works and Transport has rolled out a strict new vehicle restriction policy aimed at enhancing road safety and traffic flow in Ilorin. Under the new rules, tricycles (Keke Napep), commercial motorcycles (Okada), taxi cabs, trucks, and heavy-duty vehicles are banned from using certain key roads, with enforcement by the Kwara State Traffic Management Agency (KWARTMA) starting immediately. Violators of the restriction risk fines of up to ₦50,000.
Restriction signages are being installed along major routes, including Ahmadu Bello Way, a newly rehabilitated road that serves as an important link to Tanke, Fate, and River Basin areas. Acting KWARTMA CEO, Bamidele Michael, noted that these measures will work alongside existing “No Parking” signs to bolster road safety and reduce congestion.
Additionally, the Commissioner for Works and Transport, Abdulquawiy Olododo, has advised traders to avoid setting up stalls on pedestrian walkways in high-traffic areas such as Ojaoba, Gambari, and Post Office to Challenge. The Commissioner also warned that anyone caught driving against traffic will face harsh penalties.
Olododo called on the public to support the government’s initiative, underscoring that these efforts are crucial for creating safer, more efficient roads across Kwara.
