Kwara State has made history by emerging as the overall champion of the 2025 President’s Senior School Debate Competition — its first time winning the prestigious national contest.
The 26th edition of the competition, held from June 24 to 27 in Abeokuta, Ogun State, featured top schools from across the country. Kwara’s delegation outshined rivals in several rounds, ultimately defeating Rivers State in the final.
Welcoming the triumphant team on Friday, the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, credited the achievement to ongoing education reforms and the government’s investment in teacher welfare.
“This milestone reflects the administration’s deep commitment to transforming public education under Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq (CON). It’s a clear indication that our efforts are bearing fruit,” he said.
Describing the win as a shared accomplishment, the commissioner commended teachers, school heads, coaches, ministry officials, and other stakeholders for their roles in preparing the students.
“This is a collective victory,” he added. “We owe it to the resilience and dedication of our educators. Their contributions were instrumental in this success.”
Dr. Olohungbebe further encouraged the students to maintain their focus and strive for continued excellence, hailing them as proud ambassadors of Kwara.
The victorious team, led by teacher Babatunde Amina Idowu, includes Moshood Kamaldeen (Government Secondary School, Ilorin), AbdulAzeez Aishat (Nawarudeen Secondary School, Offa), AbdulAzeez Mutasir (St. Anthony Secondary School, Ilorin), and Usman Maryam Enyo (Ilorin Grammar School, Ilorin).
