The Kwara State Government has conducted a state-wide vaccination campaign, inoculating 132,792 animals (cattle, sheep, and goats) to prevent zoonotic diseases. This effort highlights the government’s focus on protecting both animal and public health.
The State Commissioner for Livestock Development, Honourable Oloruntoyosi Thomas, shared these details during a press briefing about Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s administration’s work.
According to the Commissioner, the campaign saw 110,241 cattle, 16,009 sheep, and 6,542 goats receive the anthrax vaccine. This wide-reaching effort aims to build strong protection against the disease within the state’s livestock.
Beyond vaccinations, Honourable Thomas mentioned the opening of a new Live Bird Market. This market is intended to help fowl sellers and poultry farmers grow their businesses. It will also serve as a place to monitor and prevent the spread of diseases that can pass from animals to humans.
The Commissioner also noted the completion of an analysis presented to national and international organizations, showing the state’s involvement in broader efforts related to food security. She emphasized the Ministry’s dedication to developing a strong and modern livestock sector in Kwara State, which aims to create jobs and improve food availability.
Honourable Thomas also announced upcoming plans for a rabies vaccination program, demonstrating the government’s commitment to preventing rabies from dog and cat bites to protect public health.
