Kwara State, Nigeria – Teachers in North Central Nigeria are embracing Artificial Intelligence (AI) to modernize education as part of a groundbreaking initiative by the Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative (BBYDI). The workshop, themed *”Empowering Teachers for Inclusive Education through Digital Skills and Artificial Intelligence,”* equipped educators with digital tools to create more inclusive and effective classrooms.
The event brought together teachers, AI experts, and policymakers to explore AI’s potential to personalize learning, simplify assessments, and boost productivity. BBYDI Global Director, Abideen Olasupo, emphasized that the program reflects the organization’s commitment to leveraging AI to tackle education challenges.
During his session, Sikiru Issah Nuhu, a lecturer at Kwara State University, highlighted AI’s transformative potential and ethical considerations. “AI can revolutionize classrooms, but responsible deployment is crucial to avoid reinforcing biases or diminishing critical thinking,” he noted.
Facilitators introduced tools like Canva, Google Docs, and Kahoot for interactive teaching and demonstrated how Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) can enhance engagement. Teachers also explored Learning Management Systems such as Google Classroom for streamlining administrative tasks.
The workshop ended with teachers developing action plans to introduce these innovations in their schools, despite acknowledging challenges like limited internet access and the cost of devices. BBYDI pledged continued support to help overcome these barriers.
This initiative is a step towards transforming Nigeria’s education system, setting the stage for AI-driven learning that could influence teaching practices across the continent. Teachers expressed optimism, with one participant stating, “We are ready to inspire change in our schools.”
