The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday, January 13, 2025, impeached Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker after almost a decade of leadership. Obasa, who represented Agege Constituency I and was first elected into the Assembly in 2007, had been Speaker since June 2015. However, more than two-thirds of the 40-member legislature voted to remove him, citing alleged misconduct and other offenses.
Abiodun Tobun, a member of the Assembly representing Epe Constituency I, revealed that the lawmakers’ decision was unanimous and aimed at preserving the “sanctity” and “integrity” of the House. Speaking to reporters, Tobun said, “The Constitution makes it clear that the House has the powers to regulate its proceedings. So, the members of the House felt that they’ve had enough of the Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa. Today, we unanimously agreed that Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda Lasbat becomes the new Speaker.”
He added, “We cannot open our House and allow this parliament to dwindle. We owe our constituents and Lagos State a duty to ensure the sanctity and integrity of this House are restored.”
Following Obasa’s impeachment, his deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, was immediately elected as the new Speaker. Meranda’s appointment marks a historic moment as she becomes the first female Speaker in the Lagos Assembly and across the South-West region.
This development underscores the lawmakers’ resolve to uphold accountability while ushering in a new era of leadership in the Assembly.
