Motorists faced severe traffic disruption on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Wednesday following a fatal accident involving a 40ft container truck on the Kara Bridge. The truck driver, whose identity remains unknown, lost his life in the crash.
Damilola Oke-Osanyitolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed the incident, which completely obstructed vehicular movement along the busy axis.
“Following distress calls received at 4:26 am via the Emergency Toll-Free Lines, LASEMA activated its Emergency Response Plans. Upon arrival, the Response Team discovered that a truck laden with steel coils and a 40ft container had overturned, blocking the road,” Oke-Osanyitolu stated.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the truck driver lost control while attempting to avoid another truck, causing the vehicle to overturn and discharge its cargo onto the road. The driver’s body was reportedly removed before the arrival of emergency personnel.
Emergency responders, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the police, collaborated to clear the debris and restore traffic flow.
In a related incident, another crash involving three vehicles in the same area left four individuals injured. The victims were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
By Wednesday afternoon, traffic remained sluggish, stretching from the Otedola Bridge to the OPIC section of the expressway. Authorities have urged motorists to exercise patience and follow road safety regulations.
