Lagos State retirees under the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) have issued a desperate call to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, demanding urgent action on long-overdue pension increases and unpaid arrears.
At a press briefing on Wednesday, the pensioners under the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS) expressed frustration over the non-implementation of a ₦32,000 pension increase linked to the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act, the non-payment of 57 months of accrued pension arrears, and outstanding adjustments from a five-year pension increase due since January 2024.
The retirees accused top state officials, including the Lagos State Head of Service, of ignoring their pleas and blocking access to the governor. They warned that the economic hardship has left many pensioners struggling to survive and issued a 14-day ultimatum for the government to act or face further protests.
With tensions rising, the pensioners urged the Lagos government to honor its commitments, declaring, “We are Senior Citizens, not Senior Miscreants.”
