A 25-year-old woman, Victoria Effiong, has been arraigned before a Lagos State Magistrates’ Court in Iba for allegedly refusing to marry a man after receiving gifts and cash worth N2.8 million from him. The charges against Effiong include breach of peace, cheating, and obtaining by false pretenses.
According to the police prosecutor, Inspector Chinedu Njoku, the incident occurred on September 25, 2024, at Ajanaku Street, Isashi. Effiong is accused of unlawfully obtaining N2,866,000 from Dominic Asuquo under the pretense of agreeing to marry him. During their relationship, Effiong allegedly received various items, including an iPhone worth N240,000, clothing, a wristwatch, shoes, and bags valued at N350,000. Additionally, she received a cash sum of N810,000 and daily feeding money for seven months worth N868,000.
The situation escalated when Asuquo discovered that Effiong was planning to marry another man, despite having introduced him to her parents earlier. Effiong, however, denied any formal engagement with Asuquo and claimed he knew she was seeing someone else. She pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The court has yet to reach a verdict, but the case has drawn significant attention, highlighting the complexities of relationships and the potential legal consequences of broken promises.
