Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has debunked claims circulating on social media that it demolished a building in Lekki. The agency clarified that the video, which shows the demolition of a property, was misleading and aimed at tarnishing its reputation.
The viral video, posted by reality TV star Chioma Ikokwu, shows her lamenting the demolition of her property, which housed her hair business and restaurant. She alleged that LASBCA officials denied her access to her belongings and used policemen to intimidate her.
However, LASBCA’s General Manager, Gbolahan Oki, stated that the property owner carried out the demolition illegally without obtaining the necessary permits. He emphasized that the agency had served multiple notices to the owner to remove the illegal attachment, but the owner failed to comply.
Oki further explained that LASBCA’s actions were in line with the state government’s commitment to urban regeneration and sustainable development. He assured the public that the agency would continue to enforce building regulations to ensure a safe and sustainable environment.
The agency also addressed claims of harassment by its officials, stating that the video aimed to mislead the public and garner undue sympathy. Oki reiterated that LASBCA would not be deterred by attempts to distort facts or manipulate public perception.
In conclusion, LASBCA maintains that it followed due process and that the demolition was carried out by the property owner without adhering to the required procedures.
