I just got off the phone with one of those who follow me here. A 2.2 graduate who won a scholarship to study in one of the universities in Europe.
While not fully funded, het got tuition waiver, and €500 monthly stipend. He landed last weekend and called me to lament about how what he wanted is to go to the US, and that he would have loved to have his scholarship fully funded.
I laughed hard on the call and I reminded him of last year. This time last year, he was not in a good place. He wasn’t sure he could even be considered for any scholarship- I checked his profile, encouraged him to apply to 10 different universities. He did 3 in Europe, 2 in the UK, and 5 in the US. All came negative except for the one he applied last to in Europe. I advised him to take it, go spend a year in Europe and ensure he graduate with a good grade so he could use that to build a portfolio for a funded US PhD next year.
But now in Europe, barely a week and he’s already feeling like he deserves better.
That is life.
A lot of us are like this, we don’t always want to spend time to enjoy our little wins before moving on to the next big thing. This is called destination addiction.
Destination Addiction is a preoccupation with the idea that happiness is in the next job, next place, the next partner, the next adventure.
This takes away the bliss and joy in enjoying the moment and all the good that comes with it.
Untill you give up the idea that happiness is somewhere else, it will never be where you are.
Just as I told him on the call, the moment he has been waiting for is here, he should take it in, enjoy the ride and the bliss that comes with this moment before thinking of the next big thing.
As Eckhart Tolle said: “Acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance”
Be happy, regardless!
