Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has approved Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo, following the recommendation of the Oyomesi, the traditional kingmakers.
The announcement was made on Friday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, who explained that the decision came after thorough consultations and traditional divinations conducted by the Oyomesi.
Oyelade stated, “Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade has been recommended by the Oyomesi and approved by Governor Seyi Makinde as the new Alaafin of Oyo.”
Ademola Ojo, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, noted that the appointment resolves the legal and social controversies that arose after the death of the previous Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who passed away on April 22, 2022.
“This decision puts an end to the socio-legal disputes that followed the transition of the late Oba Adeyemi. We encourage the people of Oyo State to support the new Alaafin and join in celebrating this historic moment,” Ojo said.
Despite the announcement, the selection process remains contentious, as five prominent Oyo kingmakers, including the Basorun of Oyo, High Chief Yusuf Akinade, and four others, have rejected the governor’s decision. They argue that Prince Lukman Gbadegesin was already chosen as the Alaafin-elect and have cited ongoing court proceedings challenging the process.
Legal counsel to the kingmakers, Adekunle Sobaloju, described the governor’s action as illegal, urging for a suspension of the appointment until the court delivers its verdict.
The state government, however, has expressed optimism that the reign of the new Alaafin will bring peace, unity, and prosperity to the Oyo Kingdom. Residents have been urged to rally behind Prince Owoade as he assumes leadership of the historic throne.
