The Kwara State Fire Service has confirmed the recovery of a 43-year-old man who died after jumping into a well in the Edun area of Ilorin West Local Government Area, shortly after the Eid-el-Kabir festivities.
The victim, identified simply as Kareem, was said to have taken a hard drug known locally as ‘Colorado’ (Synthetic Cannabinoids) before the incident occurred.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the agency’s Head of Media and Publicity, Hassan Adekunle, the distress call was received at about 10:29 a.m. on Friday. Firefighters were immediately deployed to the scene at Ile Alapo, Edun, where they recovered the lifeless body from the well.
“The victim reportedly jumped into the well shortly after returning from Eid prayers, allegedly under the influence of a substance known as ‘Colo’ (Colorado),” the statement read. The remains were handed over to Inspector Babatunde Amos of the C Division Police Station in Ilorin. The Ministry is currently awaiting formal identification and claim of the body by the deceased’s family.
Attempts to reach the spokesperson for the Kwara State Police Command, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, for further comments were unsuccessful, as calls and messages to her WhatsApp line were not returned at the time of filing this report.
Reacting to the development, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Falade Olumuyiwa, expressed sorrow over the incident and used the opportunity to warn residents against drug abuse, noting that substance misuse continues to pose serious risks to lives.
