The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has presented a budget proposal of ₦67.5 billion for the 2025 fiscal year, seeking increased support from the National Assembly to bolster its fight against drug abuse and trafficking.
During the budget defense sessions before the House Committee on Narcotic Drugs and the Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics, NDLEA Chairman/CEO Brigadier General Mohammed Buba Marwa (Retd) emphasized the agency’s critical needs. The proposed budget allocates approximately ₦47.16 billion for personnel costs, ₦3.38 billion for operational overheads, and ₦16.97 billion for capital expenditure.
Marwa highlighted the necessity of enhancing the capital expenditure to address infrastructure challenges, particularly the construction of barracks to provide secure accommodation for NDLEA personnel. He noted that many commands currently operate from inadequate rented facilities, which hampers effective administration and exposes staff to security risks. Proper accommodation, he argued, would enhance staff morale, ensure security, and strengthen the agency’s capacity to execute its mandate.
Expressing gratitude for the ongoing support from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Assembly, Marwa reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to collaborating with legislative bodies to achieve a drug-free Nigeria. He stated, “With your support, we are confident in our ability to enhance our operations and fulfill our mandate of safeguarding the security of our nation.”
In response, the House Committee Chairman on Narcotic Drugs, Hon. Abass Adigun, acknowledged the NDLEA’s vital role in protecting communities from narcotics and illicit substances. He assured the committee’s dedication to ensuring that public funds are allocated efficiently to support the agency’s operations. Similarly, Senate Committee Chairman on Drugs and Narcotics, Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo, commended the NDLEA’s performance in 2024 and pledged continued support to enhance its effectiveness in the coming year.
The NDLEA’s budget proposal comes amid growing challenges posed by sophisticated drug cartels and the prevalence of substance abuse in Nigeria. The agency’s leadership underscores the importance of adequate funding to implement reforms and infrastructure projects essential for combating these issues effectively.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with the complexities of drug-related crimes, the NDLEA’s appeal for enhanced funding reflects a strategic effort to strengthen its operational capabilities and safeguard public health and security.
